Tom Harris, Harris Auto Group

Mr. Tom Harris was awarded the New Car Dealers Association of BC Lifetime Achievement Award on September 21, 2015. Click to view the NCDA Tribute to Tom Harris video.

Mr. Harris was the Dealer Principal of Tom Harris Chevrolet Cadillac Ltd. from 1983 – 2009, and is currently Dealer Principal of Harris Kia in Nanaimo. Mr. Harris is also the President of Tom Harris Cellular Ltd., a chain of Fifty Telus Mobility stores in British Columbia and Alberta. He is also partnered in Harris Mazda, Harris Oceanside Chevrolet Buick GMC, Harris Victoria Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, and O.K. Tire Parksville. (He was previously partnered in Harris Nissan North Island, and Harris Mitsubishi, which were sold in 2014 and 2015 respectively).

Always active in Dealer Associations and community work, he is Past President of the BCADA (The New Car Dealers of BC), and past Chairman of the board of The CADA (The Canadian Auto Dealers Association). He also served the CADA on the Industry Relations Committee. He is also Past Chairman of General Motors National Dealer Communications Team. He is the Past Chairman of the Nanaimo District Hospital Foundation and has chaired the Nanaimo United Way Campaign. He sat on the Nanaimo Community Foundation Board and was the Vice-Chairman of the Board of the BC Ferry Authority. He chaired the Capital Campaign to build a permanent home for St. John Ambulance in Nanaimo. Mr. Harris was named Citizen of the Year for Nanaimo in 2004. In 2005 he was appointed to the Order of St. John and also received the Rotary Centennial Service Award for Professional Excellence. In 2012 Mr. Harris received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, created to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the Throne. This prestigious medal was presented to Mr. Harris by Ron Cantelon MLA, on December 15th, 2012, to recognize Tom’s dedicated service to his peers, his community, and to Canada. Mr. Harris and his wife Christine live in Lantzville and have five adult children and nine grandchildren.

Marnie Carter, Carter Auto Family

Marnie Carter, Matriarch of the Carter Auto Group, is recognized for her service to the New Car Dealers Foundation of BC. Marnie joined the Foundation Board in 2000, and became Chairperson in 2003. After serving for an entire decade, Marnie stepped down from her role as Chair in 2012, but continues to serve as an active Director.

Marnie’s ongoing energy and commitment towards the Foundation and its endeavours is remarkable. She takes on a leadership role with the Foundation and Special Olympics BC Auction every year. On average, the auction raises close to $200,000 annually and a large amount of this can be linked back to Marnie’s work.

Additionally, Marnie (and the Carter Auto Family) was one of four individuals who contributed a major leadership contribution, allowing the New Car Dealers of BC to establish an endowment fund. Interest income from the endowment fund is given out on an annual basis through the Foundation’s CarCareerBC Grant Program to young people in BC who are following their dreams to enter into the automotive industry.

Jim Pattison, Jim Pattison Auto Group

Mr. Jimmy Pattison was awarded the New Car Dealers Association of BC Lifetime Achievement Award on September 19, 2011.

Jim Pattison is the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and sole owner of The Jim Pattison Group. The Jim Pattison Group is Canada’s 3rd largest privately held company and, in a recent survey by The Financial Post, The Jim Pattison Group was ranked as Canada’s 48th largest company. The Jim Pattison Group has more than 33,000 employees, annual sales of $7.2 billion and operations in 455 locations. With investments in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Europe, Asia and Australia, The Jim Pattison Group is involved in a wide variety of industries including: Food Services, Packaging, Distribution, Manufacturing, Communications, Entertainment, Transportation, and Export Services.

The Jim Pattison Group began on May 8, 1961 when Mr. Pattison purchased a General Motors automobile dealership by borrowing $40,000 from the Royal Bank of Canada, and placing his home and life insurance policy with the Bank as collateral.
Jim Pattison was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and moved with his parents from Sas¬katoon to Vancouver in 1935. He has lived in Vancouver ever since. While attending the University of British Columbia, Mr. Pattison paid his tuition and expenses by washing cars at a used car lot, and by selling cars to fellow students.

Jim Pattison has served as a Director on a number of Boards, and is currently a direc¬tor of Canadian Forest Products ( Canfor Corporation ); Brookfield Asset Management, Sun-Rype Products, and serves as a Trustee on the Board of the Ronald Reagan Presiden¬tial Foundation. He held the unpaid position of Chairman and President of Expo ’86, a world-class Exposition held in Vancouver, British Columbia from May 2, 1986 to October 13, 1986.

Mr. Pattison was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1987, and the Order of British Columbia in 1990. He is also the recipient of the Governor General’s Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canada. Mr. Pattison is an inductee of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame and the Canadian Professional Sales Association Hall of Fame. He was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year – Lifetime Achievement Award in of 2000, the International Horatio Alger Award in Washington, DC in 2004,and the Young President’s Organzation Canadian Icon Award in 2007.

Mr. Pattison is married. He and his wife have three children, and in his leisure time, Mr. Pattison enjoys playing the piano, organ and trumpet.
