Building the Next Generation of Auto Workers in the Classroom

By May 27, 2026No Comments3 min read

The automotive industry is evolving faster than ever, driven by new technologies, shifting consumer expectations, and rapid innovation. However, as vehicles become more advanced, one challenge continues to accelerate alongside that progress – a growing need for skilled, motivated workers to support the industry’s future.

For BC’s New Car Dealers, supporting the next generation of automotive professionals is a responsibility we take seriously. Through a partnership between the New Car Dealers Foundation of BC and Snap-on, the CarCareerBC Education Grant helps students pursue post-secondary education and training that opens the door to meaningful careers in automotive.

The grant supports students across a wide range of disciplines – from service and repair training to business, marketing, and other programs – all of which play a vital role in supporting BC’s more than 400 new car dealers and the communities they serve. The new car sector in this province generates more than $17 billion in economic activity each year, underscoring the industry’s role as a cornerstone of BC’s economy – and highlighting the need for a strong, reliable, and steady pipeline of skilled workers.

We have a long-standing commitment to working with young people, recognizing that they are the future of our industry. We are continuing to showcase this commitment by offering the CarCareerBC Grant directly through the following schools: BCIT Award, Coast Mountain College Award, College of New Caledonia, Automotive Business School of Canada (Georgian College) Grant, Julia Blockberger Grant (BCIT Tourism), Okanagan College Award, Richard C. Gauthier CADA Scholarship, Vancouver Island University Grant and Vancouver Community College.

This grant provides financial support towards tuition and books, as well as tools for recipients enrolled in applicable apprenticeship, training or education. The New Car Dealers Foundation Board of Directors acts as the award committee and award several grants each year.

I see firsthand how critical it is that we continue investing in young people who want to build their futures in the automotive world. Our partnerships with post‑secondary institutions are not just about funding education – they are about creating clear, practical pathways from the classroom to the floor of one of BC’s many new car dealerships. By working closely with educators and students, we are helping ensure the next generation enters the workforce with the skills, confidence and experience our industry needs to continue serving communities across BC.

That’s why offering grants like this across the province matters – because the future strength of our industry depends on having skilled workers in every corner of BC and that starts by training the next generation of workers.

Applications are now open for those looking to drive into a long future with the automotive industry. To be eligible, you must have lived in British Columbia for 12 consecutive months during the year prior to applying for the grant – highlighting our commitment to supporting and growing local talent.
